HIRING POSITION:  Director - Downtown Development Authority

EMPLOYEE GROUP:  Regular Full-Time
PAY RANGE:   $60,000 to $75,000 (DOQ)
WORK SCHEDULE:  Monday – Thursday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, Friday 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, requires some evening meetings and weekends related to special events.

The Lyon Township Downtown Development Authority is seeking an energetic candidate with a passion and skill set for promoting downtown revitalization to serve as Director for the Downtown Development Authority.  Lyon Township is one of the fastest growing communities in Michigan with tremendous opportunities for growth and redevelopment of its downtown area.

The successful candidate will possess strong written and oral communication, technology/social media skills, project management, and organizational skills with experience in, or strong understanding of, several or all of the following areas:

  • Economic development
  • Small business recruitment and retention
  • Public relations
  • Volunteer management
  • Historic preservation
  • Marketing and promotions
  • Project Management
  • Grant Writing, and event planning is a plus.

The Director must be well-organized, self-motivated and able to work well with a diverse group of township/county/state leaders, business owners, staff, volunteers, committee members and community groups. 

SPECIAL SKILLS & TRAINING:  Proficient with computers; MS Word and Excel preferred.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as ability to work with community leaders, public agencies, business owners, developers, and the general public.  Required exceptional skills include the ability to prepare and present reports and studies on variety of technical issues related to downtown redevelopment and economic development.  Knowledge of relevant county, state, and federal downtown and economic development programs, incentives, and techniques as well as local community plans and policies.  Valid State of Michigan driver’s license required.

BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES: The DDA Director will serve as the primary point of contact for all of the downtown economic development and redevelopment inquiries and opportunities.  They will coordinate and manage day-to-day operations, projects, and programs of the DDA in coordination with Township elected and appointed officials under the general direction of the Township Supervisor and DDA Board.  Work includes promoting the township as a business location by providing resources and technical assistance to entrepreneurs and developers contemplating investment.  Ability to connect with appropriate local, county, regional, state and federal resource programs.  Provide professional expertise and assist in organizing, coordinating and implementing the DDA program-of-work through its active committees.  Acts a representative to local businesses to build working relationships and perform advocacy functions when needed.  Develops and maintains communications with key contacts, local business owners and other interested groups in order to gather and disseminate pertinent information regarding business needs and economic development services.

EDUCATION, ACCEPTALBE TRAINING AND PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE:  Candidate should have a background that includes a Bachelor’s degree in business or public administration, economic development, marketing or a closely related field, and extensive 5+ years’ experience in economic development, downtown development, business, or marketing, including project management and administrative experience.  Affiliation with or strong working knowledge of the National Main Street model of downtown revitalization and/or membership in a related professional organization and certified economic developer training are highly desirable.
