 Kite Festival A Success

The 1st Annual Lyon Township Kite Festival held at the newly dedicated James F. Atchison Memorial Park lived up to its expectation of a fun day for families.  With over 75 to 100 kites of all sizes in the air simultaneously, the sky was a colorful sight for the over 2,200 people who attended.

During the month of April (National Kite Month), six area libraries held kite building and decorating workshops for kids in anticipation of the festival.   For those kids who missed the library programs, the workshops were repeated during the festival, with 400 free kite kits provided.  Contests were held for the most colorful, most unique, and most patriotically decorated kites.  Kids also enjoyed the presence of Ronald McDonald and the Great Green Turtle. Wonder jumps were available for kids to bounce out some energy while the parents watched the fabulous display of kites, some over 150 feet long.  The Kiwanis Club sold hot dogs, chips, and pop with the proceeds going to needed activities in the area.  Face painting and background music rounded out the attractions.

Much of the success of the festival can be attributed to the kite enthusiasts on hand to help the people learn some kite flying techniques.  Before the day was over, a number of people in cars on the expressway found their way to the festival for a closer look at the kites.  Many thanks go out to the volunteers and sponsors that made the Kite Festival a great success.  We greatly appreciate everyone who helped make this event happen.
