The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) handles requests for variances from
the Zoning Ordinance, interpretations of the Zoning Ordinance, and administrative reviews/appeals of decisions.
If you wish to appear before the Zoning Board of Appeals, please
consider the following:
1. An application needs to be completed and submitted. You may pick up an application at the Township, request to have one sent to you, or print the one found here. The application must be filled out completely,
including identifying the section of the Zoning Ordinance from which you are seeking a variance. The signatures of the applicant and property owner must be notarized. Generally, there are notaries available at the Township. Please also note that if your application is accompanied by plans, 10 copies of plans must be submitted.
2. The appropriate fee must be paid. The fee is $50 for a variance for
one single family residential lot, $500 for all other variances and appeals. The fee may be paid by cash, check, or money order (made payable to
Lyon Township). The Township cannot accept credit or debit cards. If an application is submitted without the fee, the application will not be processed.
3. Since all cases presented to the ZBA are public hearings, please be
advised that a public hearing notice will be published in the local newspaper of record (the South Lyon Herald) no later than 15 days prior
to a meeting. The same notice will also be mailed to parcels within 300'
of the subject parcel. This will be handled by the Township once the applicant submits the application and appropriate fee.
4. The applicant or a designated representative must attend the meeting to present their case to the ZBA.
